STC CINE MIST Series easily create the mood to support your narrative by softening your light sources. Whether you are creating an ethereal dreamscape or film noir, STC’s CINE MIST filter lets you focus on telling the story, not fiddling with equipment.
CINE MiST filters are built upon our durable Ultra Layer® coating technology. STC Optics is focused on producing the tools so creators can focus on telling their stories in the most difficult shooting environments with zero vignetting.
Features

The diffusion layers gently smoothes the harsh over sharpness common to the modern digital camera. Soften the highlights and make your subjects glow.

The effect of the Cine Mist Filter reacts to light due to the inclusion of scattering particles within the glass. These particles enhance highlights and diffuse light, reducing the contrast between light and shadow subtly.
The images show measurements of STC Cine Mist Filter 1/4 and 1/8 filters under 10x magnification, using colored light for imaging within a 1280μm square frame. The green tint visible in the images is not inherent to the glass but a result of the imaging process.
As the filter value increases (1/2 > 1/4 > 1/8), the number of scattering particles per unit area also increases. This results in a stronger reaction to the same amount of incident light. However, the photographic effects do not scale proportionally with these values and cannot be calculated as simple multiples.

The usage scenarios are not limited to portrait creation. When used in landscapes and in environments with direct light, Cine Mist filter can be brought into play. Especially when using under diffusing light and overflow lights, it can bring richer light to the picture. It also reduces excessive digital sharpness of ultra-high resolution camera or lenses without losing detail.

Under the same lighting conditions with fixed exposure settings, photographs were taken using STC clip-in CineMist filters of varying softness levels.
These four photos allow for comparing and discerning changes in direct light sources, reflected light, and diffused light within the scene.

Only one direct light source in the environment has changed, while the ambient and backlighting remain constant. The exposure settings are also fixed.
When shooting with the same softness level of STC clip-in CineMist filter, the intensity of the direct light source will also affect the degree of light diffusion and softening.
Therefore, there is no absolute result when using CineMist filters—you must choose based on the overall light sources of different origins and states!
